The Training Arcade

CHALLENGE

The Training Arcade was born out of a need to make traditional corporate training more engaging. Completion rates for standard eLearning were low, and the market needed something built for engagement first, compliance second. The opportunity was to build a full game-based learning platform from the ground up, one flexible enough to serve clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small businesses, and robust enough to support dozens of distinct game mechanics.

ROLE & PROCESS

I built Training Arcade's design system from zero, defining the visual language, interaction patterns, and UX framework across more than 15 game types, from trivia and matching games to branching scenarios and simulations. A core part of the work was designing the client-facing theming functionality, giving clients the ability to brand and customize their own games without breaking the underlying design system. I also designed the backend experience with a user-first focus, making sure the tools clients used to build and manage their games were intuitive rather than just functional. On top of the system architecture, I created the visual assets and art direction for the games themselves, and ran accessibility and WCAG compliance into the process from the start rather than after the fact. I also built and delivered client-facing sales demos.

SOLUTION

Training Arcade launched as a cohesive, scalable design system rather than a one-off product. Clients could select from a growing library of game types, each built on shared design principles so the experience felt consistent no matter which mechanic a course used. A licensed Jeopardy-branded game was part of the catalog, giving clients access to a recognizable, high-production game format alongside the custom-built mechanics. The theming system let clients brand and customize any game to match their own visual identity, while the backend stayed intuitive enough that non-designers could build and launch training without needing design support. That balance of flexibility and structure let the team ship new game types faster without starting from scratch each time..

IMPACT

Training Arcade became one of ELB Learning's flagship products and a core part of the company's sales pitch. It won industry recognition for game-based learning design and served as the foundation for major partnerships, including EverFi's SDK integration across 15 courses reaching more than 6 million students. The platform is still active today, and the design system I built continues to be the framework new game types are built on.
